THE AFA SAM JOHNSON-DALLAS CHAPTER NEEDS YOUR HELP!
Our mission is to provide motivation for young people to understand the need for a strong aerospace force component of our national defense posture. Scholarships and financial support are provided to allow our youth to participate in aerospace programs in which they might not otherwise be able to participate. Providing these scholarships, scholastic awards and financial support requires funds.
AFA SAM JOHNSON CHAPTER AFJROTC SCHOLARSHIPS: In recognition of the lifetime of service that Congressman (USAF Colonel, Ret.) Sam Johnson gave to his country and his membership in the Sam Johnson Chapter, the Chapter provides a $3,000 college scholarship to an outstanding AFJROTC graduate from each of the fourteen high schools in our area which offer AFJROTC programs, and who intend to enroll in ROTC in college. Each scholarship awardee is then asked to apply, which is judged by a panel of Sam Johnson Chapter members for selection for an additional $10,000 scholarship.
Civil AIR PATROL FLIGHT (CAP) ACADEMIES: Civil Air Patrol Cadets are required to learn the physics of flight, how engines and aircraft systems work, how to read aeronautical charts, air power history, etc. Special summer academies are available for CAP Cadets to receive flight instruction in either gliders or powered aircraft. These are intense encampments where they attend ground school half the day and fly the other half with Certified Flight Instructors with a goal to fly solo. The Sam Johnson Chapter provides financial assistance to CAP Cadets attending the Flight Academies.
YOUTH LEADERSHIP CONFERENCES: Each summer, the Sam Johnson Chapter sponsors high school students, who have completed their sophomore or junior year in high school to attend one of the Youth Leadership Conferences (YLCs), conducted through the Patriotic Education Program of the Military Order of the World Wars (MOWW). These five-day, four-night programs are held at various locations across the State of Texas.
AIR FORCE JROTC (AFJROTC) CADET LEADERSHIP COURSE (CLC): The Sam Johnson Chapter provides financial support to this optional summer program that teaches AFJROTC cadets the aspects of citizenship and leadership in a highly structured and focused instructional environment. Its mission is to promote this development by preparing cadets for leadership roles in their units, schools, and local communities. As such, the activities during CLC should stress the following: team building, leadership, and respect for authority, responsible citizenship, personal character, academic achievement, health, and community service.
CYBERPATRIOT: CyberPatriot is the National Youth Cyber Education Program. There are three main programs within CyberPatriot: the National Youth Cyber Defense Competition, AFA CyberCamps and the Elementary School Cyber Education Initiative. CyberPatriot was conceived by the Air & Space Forces Association (AFA) to inspire students toward careers in cybersecurity or other science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines that are critical to our nation’s future. STELLARXPLORERS: Working in partnership with leaders in the U.S. space industry, space-focused academia, and government entities, the StellarXplorers Space STEM Program, was created by the Air & Space Forces Association (AFA), to inspire K-12 students through an exciting space-focused competition toward careers in aerospace, aviation, and other science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines critical to our nation’s future. SAM JOHNSON CHAPTER STEM TEACHER OF THE YEAR: The purpose of the program is to recognize classroom teachers at the chapter and state level for their accomplishments and achievements in exciting K-12 students about science and math (STEM) and preparing them to use and contribute to tomorrow’s technologies. This is a unique opportunity to reward special teachers who are furthering excellence and making coming to class an adventure. The winner of our chapter contest receives a $1,000 cash award and is entered into competition at the State level, where a larger cash award can be earned, and the winner at that level is entered into an AFA National Teacher of the Year contest.
WOUNDED AIRMEN & GUARDIANS PROGRAM: AFA created the Wounded Airmen & Guardians Program in 2011 with a focus on taking care of our DAF service members Air & Space family is made up of many supporters beyond those who have had the privilege of wearing the uniform. We are family members, community supporters, spouses, and friends. We make up our Air & Space Forces family, and we will always take care of our own. AFA’s Wounded Airmen & Guardians Program ensures that our Air & Space Forces brothers and sisters, who have given so much to our great country, will always be taken care of by their Air & Space Forces.
