Youth Leadership Course (YLC)
Developing Tomorrow’s Leaders through Patriotic Education
Each summer, the Sam Johnson Chapter invests in the next generation by sponsoring at least ten high-potential high school students who have completed their sophomore or junior year to attend the Youth Leadership Conference (YLC). These immersive five-day, four-night programs are conducted by the Texas Patriotic Education Foundation of the Military Order of the World Wars (MOWW) and are hosted at various university campuses across Texas and in Oklahoma City.
A Prestigious Educational Standard The YLC is not a typical summer camp; it is a rigorous leadership laboratory. The curriculum is specifically developed to meet the standards of the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) and is featured on their List of Approved Contests, Programs, and Activities for Students.
A Unique Curriculum While many secondary schools focus on core academics, the YLC provides specialized instruction in areas often overlooked in modern classrooms:
- 50% Leadership Theory & Application: Students engage in leadership problem-solving exercises and team-building workshops.
- 30% American Heritage & Patriotism: Expert speakers and field trips provide a deep dive into the foundations of our Republic.
- 20% The American Free Enterprise System: A focused look at the economic principles that drive our nation’s prosperity.
The Experience: From Mock Trials to Mentorship Participants don’t just listen—they lead. Highlights of the conference include:
- Interactive Learning: Students participate in a Mock Trial presided over by active or retired civilian judges, where they take on the roles of attorneys, witnesses, and jurors.
- Distinguished Faculty: Presentations are delivered by subject matter experts, retired military leaders, and civic professionals.
- Impactful Results: Every year, our sponsored students return with a renewed sense of purpose. Their feedback consistently describes the YLC as “life-changing,” providing them with a moral compass and a leadership toolkit that serves them throughout their university years and professional careers.
